"Free Zones Go Global" Brings Its Vision to the 12th WFZO World Congress

The 12th WFZO World Congress, held in Panama City from May 12-14, 2026, brought together more than 2,000 representatives from across the globe to address one of the key questions shaping international trade today: what role will Free Zones play in the businesses of the future?
Discussions across Free Zones focused on agribusiness, data centers, logistics, tourism, and digital services all pointed to the same conclusion. Free Zones are one of the most dynamic and adaptable tools available to countries looking to attract investment in high-growth sectors for the coming years, enabling them to compete in an economy that is evolving faster than most regulatory frameworks can adapt.
Three ideas came through loud and clear:
-
Free Zones are the single greatest accelerator for the emerging businesses of our time, precisely because they create the right ecosystem for industries to grow, scale, and compete globally.
-
Their impact reaches well beyond any individual business initiatives, as they drive regional development, and their benefits flow through to communities, supply chains, and local industries.
-
None of this happens on its own. Free Zones need real institutional and political support to grow and consolidate, and that is a responsibility governments and Free Zone authorities have an important role in supporting.
What also stood out was how eager Free Zone operators are to think beyond their own borders. The most competitive zones today are defined by their ability to connect with investors, markets, and with global networks that open doors they couldn't open alone.Â
This is exactly what "Free Zones Go Global" — the strategic alliance between the World Trade Centers Association (WTCA) and Araújo Ibarra International Business Consultants — brought to the table at the Congress. Through our exhibition stand at the Convention Center, we connected with leading Free Zones from around the world and made the case for what this initiative delivers: the reach and credibility of the global WTCA network, combined with the competitive edge that Free Zone regimes offer.
"The momentum is there. The task now is to channel it." — MartĂn Gustavo Ibarra, CEO, AraĂşjo Ibarra International Business Consultants.
