SAVANNAH, GA, USA – World Trade Center Savannah hosted two Global Education Programs in the month of February. On February 4, WTC Savannah hosted “The Automated Commercial Environment (ACE)” and on February 17, “The Fiscal Impact vs. The Economic Impact in Foreign-Direct Investment.”

The Automated Commercial Environment highlighted a system designed by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to facilitate legitimate trade while enhancing border security. Myra Reynolds, the Director of Import Compliance at John S. James Co., led the seminar. John S. James is a member of the National Customs Brokers and Forwarders Association of America (NCBFAA) and a WTC Savannah partner. Reynolds spoke to the group, specific to the logistics industry, about the benefits of electronic manifest, the latest ACE news and the current and upcoming designated requirements.

The program “The Fiscal Impact vs. The Economic Impact in Foreign-Direct Investment” highlighted the crucial difference between economic impact and fiscal impact in foreign-direct investment (FDI). Veteran business analyst and economist, Dr. Alfie Meek, Director of the Center for Economic Development Research (CEDR) at Georgia Tech’s Enterprise Innovation Institute, presented the seminar to a room full of regional economic development professionals.

With an increasing focus on FDI in local communities, Dr. Meek discussed the importance of identifying target industries and structured incentive plans in order to be competitive in the global marketplace. Topics included economic stimulus programs, roles of taxation in influencing FDI, the impact of expenditure and revenue, the determinants of FDI flows, tax treaties and development expenditure.
