WTC Bhubaneswar - Session on Empowering Women

BHUBANESWAR, INDIA - Session on Women Empowerment sets stage to redefine the role of Women in today’s era. Eternity – “An Interactive Session on Empowering Women”.

“Woman is “Shakti”, Shakti represents strength. The strength we could visibly see in a woman like Mother Teresa” said Ms. Priyanka Panda, Director, Learnitude Technologies Pvt. Ltd. This she said while delivering the opening remarks in an interactive session on empowering women organized by World Trade Centre Bhubaneswar in association with Learnitude Technologies Pvt. Ltd. here on 17th December 2017 at 2nd Floor Conference Hall, Fortune Towers, Chandrasekarpur, Bhubaneswar. While welcoming all the speakers and participants to the session she further added that “today’s imperative session would be a brainstorming one on the subject as to how our society could empower women who already inherit the strength bestowed by nature on them to give birth to a new life. The session would thus deliberate upon how education and entrepreneurship could act as vital tools for making women realize their strengths”.

Speaking about the role of education Mrs. Sudha Mishra, stated that “education is not only about literacy. A woman does not get empowered if she learns how to write her name but it ideally is very much about learning the value of life. An educational system if is set in the right manner would help easing lot of hurdles and societal barriers in a woman’s progress”. She emphasised that building of specific and relevant skill sets, learning through practical experience, an opportunity to appreciate the joy of thinking out of the box and a realization created on their inherent strengths of multitasking are some of the channels to empower woman through education as a means. She further advocated that it is this education which would help a woman explore her hidden potentials and give her the basic confidence in taking up any option of livelihood of her choice and caliber. 

Subsequently, a presentation was made by Ms. Pushpasree Debi, Program Manager, Action Aid. Action Aid presented itself as an organization working at grass root level for conservation of girl child and assisting rural women. Ms. Debi highlighted that Action Aid plays a major role in helping women in taking up a livelihood of their choice by creating remunerative opportunities for them in various activities like agriculture, taxi & auto driving, handling disaster management relief activities as part of the rescue team etc. The deliberations further enthused the participants as she also showcased how the organization is sensitizing women to fight for their rights against all the societal odds may it be sexual harassment or domestic violence. 

Following which an audio visual presentation was made by Sk. Mohd. Niyaz, Founder, DISHA (Development Institute for Scientific Research, Health & Agriculture) from Bhadrak, Odisha emphasizing the importance and role of Digital literacy. The AV showcased inspiring case studies of girls & women from across the nations who have today established themselves with the help of digitization. 

Taking forward the discussion on Digital Empowerment Mrs. Priyanka Panda, Director, Learnitude Technologies, then deliberated on various examples of women holding esteemed positions in most of the Fortune 500 companies. She also emphasised on how digital education and remote job positioning is playing a pivotal role in helping women become self-dependent and create a work life balance.
Mr. Shibaji Charan Nayak, Program Head, Wild Odisha then had an experience sharing talk on their initiatives in Mangalajodi village on creation of gender balance, emergence of the girl child and engagement of Women in bird conservation activities.
Ms. Masako Ono, an Odissi dancer from a Japanese origin further took the stage to give a classical insight to the subject and exchanged her views on empowerment of women with the participants. She also mentioned about her journey from Japan to India having followed her urge to learn Odissi dance and how she stood today as one of the most celebrated classical dancers of the state.

Ms. Anita Sabat, Director, Sabat Exports Pvt. Ltd. shared her experience in setting up an enterprise which deals with Handlooms and Handicrafts of the state of Odisha. She also expressed her concern over the dying handicrafts which are on the verge of getting extinguished because of poor skill development activities and lack of promotion of such art and craft by the State. She also highlighted the demand visible for the products of the state in various parts of the globe visited and explored by her enterprise. 

Earlier, Ms. Nimeshika Natarajan, Manager, World Trade Centre Bhubaneswar in her address took the opportunity to welcome all the speakers and participants to the session. While deliberating on the present strategy of the state to empower and develop women, she stated that the potential sectors of the State like Tourism, Agriculture, Fisheries, Textiles & Handlooms, Handicrafts etc. throw a vast gamut of opportunities for the women. Stating the session to be a small but positive step towards up-liftment of socio - economic portfolio of the state, she expressed the intent for developing a balanced and healthy society driven towards wholesome development irrespective of gender. “The Global Economic Summit 2017 to be held in March 2017 at World Trade Centre Mumbai on Women Empowerment would provide a platform for vital and focused discussions under the theme of entrepreneurship, Innovation & capacity Building and discuss achievements of women in diverse fields” she added.

Ms. Zanet Mukhya, Founder, Tare Zameen Par a pre and play school and Ms. Sharada Bharaty, Social Worker then deliberated on the subject from socio – economic perspectives, following which an open house and interactive discussion added much value to the session.
