BRICS Business Council meeting at WTC Moscow

Apr 07, 2016

MOSCOW, RUSSIA - On April 6, members of BRICS Business Council met at World Trade Center Moscow to sum up the results of Russian presidency of this transnational association.

The event was attended by the president of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, chairman of the Russian section Sergei Katyrin, chairman of the Indian section Onkar Singh Kanwar, chairman of the Brazilian section Jose Rubens de la Rosa, chairman of the Chinese section Xu Lirong, chairman of the South African section Brian Molefe, as well as representatives of BRICS member countries’ business communities. The meeting summed up the results of Russian presidency. Its participants also learned about the agenda of Indian chairmanship.

The annual report reviewed at the meeting shows progress in key areas of activity, in particular:

Fighting administrative barriers

Last year, a special task force to study the issue of existing barriers was established. Its participants analyzed the existing obstacles in trade and economic activities and made recommendations on their elimination to be presented in a report and submitted for consideration to the leaders of the BRICS countries.

Project activities

The report also gave room for the BRICS countries’ most promising joint projects in trade, economics, and investment, which could obtain funding, including from the New Development Bank.

Overall, the past year was a year of important decisions and active continuous work. For the first time, in Moscow, BRICS was able to gather the largest exhibition companies of its member countries. Another important aspect of Russia’s presidency was the growing interest in the work of the Business Council on the part of Russian regions. Choosing Ufa as the capital of BRICS summit and holding a number of business meetings there in July last year further strengthened this interest. This year, Russian regions will host two major events involving BRICS countries, the IT-Forum in Khanty-Mansiysk, and the BRICS SMEs International Forum in Ufa.

Also noteworthy is the ongoing work to improve the BRICS Business Council’s platform for business information sharing. Despite the fact that the information portal is still under development, it has become already a reliable source of information for the BRICS business community.
