Bhubaneswar tops Smart City list among first 20

BHUBANESWAR, INDIA - The Union government on 28th January 2016 unveiled the first batch of 20 cities for the ambitious Smart City mission. The 20 cities, declared by the government, included just one city with a population of over 50 lakh. The first city declared by Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu was Bhubaneswar in Odisha. 

Scoring 78.83 marks out of 100, the Capital City of Odisha not only catapulted itself to the top position but also set huge challenges to meet over next five years during which it will have to come up with smart solutions for improving itself. The city will be have to come up with smart solutions for basic infrastructure including assured water and power supply, sanitation and solid waste management, efficient transport, IT connectivity, e-governance as well as citizen centric services. The government has set aside Rs 48,000 crore for the project, and the cities were chosen through a fair competition. The investment in each city will range from Rs 1049 crore to Rs 5099 crore.
