5th WTC Mumbai Summit Concludes Successfully

MUMBAI, INDIA - World Trade Centre Mumbai and All India Association of Industries (AIAI) jointly organised the 5th Global Economic Summit (GES) on ‘Enabling Food For All’ during 19-21st November 2015.

Key features of the Summit were exhibition, business-to-business meetings, plenary sessions, workshop for farmers, release of handbook and research study. Food processing companies, crops scientists, academicians, farmer organisations, government officials (including diplomats) from around 28 countries participated in the Summit.

Some of the key exhibitors in the Summit include agriculture consultancy organisations, food processing companies, state governments, non government organisations working towards food and nutrition security and food clusters.

The three-day Summit featured seven plenary sessions on the following topics - Food Security and International Approaches, Food Production System: Emerging Trends and Global Challenges, Agricultural & Food Processing Policy Outlook, Innovative Financing for Agriculture, Food Standardisation and Safety, Post 2015 – The Role of International Standard Organisations, Agriculture Infrastructure: The Way Forward, and The Role of skill development and innovation in enhancing agricultural yield.

There was a special presentation on promoting ‘Make in Manitoba’ by Mariette Mulaire, President and CEO, World Trade Centre Winnipeg, Canada. The session showcased the economy of Manitoba, Canada and invited the audience to Centralia 2016, an annual trade promotion event of WTC Winnipeg.

The Summit also featured a workshop on Food Procurement by United Nations Procurement Division (UNPD). The workshop explained the process followed by the United Nations for procuring around 450 food commodities from contractors to support its 15 Peacekeeping Missions.

The Summit also featured a one-day workshop on best practices in farming, post-harvest management, managing agriculture finance, setting up farmer producer organisations, marketing of farm produce, procedures to start a food processing business etc. The workshop was conducted by agriculture consultant Athavale and around 60 farmers from Maharashtra benefitted from this.

On November 21st, World Trade Centre Mumbai arranged a post-event tour to Agriculture University, food processing companies, food clusters in Nagpur, a district in the State of Maharashtra for the purpose of exchanging best practices in agriculture extension services and post-harvest processing of food commodities. Around 25 foreign delegates participated in this tour.

Chief international guests in the event include Ghazi Abu Nahl, Chairman World Trade Centers Association, New York and Chairman, World Trade Center Holdings (Cyprus) Ltd and WTC Qatar, Wojciech Jankowiak, Deputy Marshal, Wielkopolska Region, Poland, Andrey Murga, Deputy Head, Stavropol Region, Russia, Marco Marzano de Marinis, Executive Director, World Farmers’ Organisation, Italy.

The chief guests from India include Subhash Desai, Honourable Minister of Industries, Government of Maharashtra, Shyam Khadka, FAO Representative in India, Hameed Nuru, Representative and Country Director, World Food Programme (WFP), India, Meera Mishra, Coordinator, International Fund for Agricultural Development, Bhushan Gagrani, IAS, Chief Executive Office, Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC).
