WINNIPEG, CANADA - The Canada-Korea Free Trade Agreement (CKFTA) is opening doors to new business. Since its official signing, the WTC Winnipeg has been leveraging the opportunity to work closely with a local northern Manitoban community, Opaskwayak Cree Nation (OCN), the Gyeongbuk Techno Park and the Korean company KAST Engineering on a pilot project consisting of a Vertical Farm system.

Mariette Mulaire, President & CEO of the WTC Winnipeg, was recently welcomed by OCN’s Chief Michael Constant to tour the facility. The OCN community launched the pilot project this past winter.

Vertical Farms are a Korean technology consisting of LED light systems that grow vegetables and fruit without soil. The process takes place in regular room temperatures in a faster and more energy efficient manner.

The project is now operational and is already deemed a success. The community has grown various vegetables as well as plants that help address diabetes.

The WTC Winnipeg is confident that the CKFTA will allow for a wider range of partnerships such as the one forged by OCN and KAST Engineering. This pilot project was, without a doubt, the tip of the iceberg for future opportunities.
