US-Ukraine Relations in Turbulent Times

WASHINGTON, DC - Ukraine has struggled to establish itself as a democratic state since the dissolution of the Soviet Union. During the 1990s, the US aided Ukraine's efforts to maximize equity in reform and to sustain social welfare with assistance from programs such as USAID. Since then Ukraine has encountered multiple conflicts within the country, including the popular Orange Revolution in 2004 and political turmoil in 2014, which allowed the annexation of Crimea by Russia. The eastern half of Ukraine is now held by separatists who wish to breakout from Kyiv. What methods can Ukraine utilize to recover from its current conflict? How effective is the support from the US in stabilizing Ukraine? Please join the World Affairs Council as they discuss with Ambassador Steven Pifer, author of The Eagle and the Trident: U.S.-Ukraine Relations in Turbulent Times, what conflict means for the US-Ukraine relationship and how the current situation impacts it.
