Meets Prasho's International Fellowship Delegates

Apr 30, 2024

The Chairman of WTC Shamshabad, Yarram Varaprasad Reddy engaged in a highly interactive and productive meeting with international delegates representing Prasho. During this meeting, they exchanged insights, discussed key topics, and explored opportunities for collaboration and partnership between the two entities. The session was characterized by meaningful dialogue and a shared commitment to fostering international cooperation and development initiatives.

Prasho is renowned for its dedication to advancing public health initiatives, and today's meeting showcases their commitment to making a difference on a global scale. We had the pleasure of learning about Prasho's collaboration with three remarkable ophthalmologists from Africa, who are participating in their Fred Hollows fellowship program. These individuals are not only pioneers in their communities but also passionate about enhancing their research skills to better serve their patients back home.

During our discussion, we had the honor of meeting Dr. Bako Monday Beatrice, a distinguished general ophthalmologist from Uganda, East Africa. Dr. Beatrice serves as the only ophthalmologist in a Regional Referral Hospital, covering 11 districts and a population of about 2 million people. Her role involves clinical work, leadership, and management, where she guides the hospital management board regarding eye health care in the region. Her experience with the fellowship has been both awe-inspiring and challenging, broadening her perspective on research and community/clinical eye care. Dr. Beatrice is confident that her newfound knowledge and skills will enable her to offer better services to patients and the community upon her return home.

We were also privileged to learn about the remarkable journeys of Dr. Gladys Atto and Dr. Brenda Walaba. Dr. Gladys Atto, a Ugandan ophthalmologist, has been instrumental in functionalizing the eye unit at Moroto Regional Referral Hospital and turning it into a Centre of Excellence for eye care services. Her outstanding contributions have earned her numerous accolades, including recognition from the Uganda Medical Association and the Ministry of Health.

Dr. Brenda Walaba, a seasoned ophthalmologist from Nairobi, Kenya, brings over five years of experience in providing eye care services in a busy government hospital. As the Chief Ophthalmologist for the Nairobi City County government, Dr. Walaba oversees eye-care services in more than ten government facilities. Her fellowship experience with Prasho and LV Prasad Eye Institute in India has enriched her knowledge and skills, particularly in public eye health. Dr. Walaba is eager to implement these learnings upon her return home to improve eye care services in line with Universal Health Coverage priorities.
