HALIFAX, CANADA – WTC Halifax worked closely with the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) to make their Annual Meeting in Halifax from August 23-26 the greenest conference going. To support CMA’s goals of reducing pollution and providing sustainable local food, WTC Halifax tailored all aspects of the conference to be exceptionally eco-friendly.
Since Nova Scotia already produces the least waste per capita and has the highest waste diversion rate in Canada, CMA was able to reduce their event’s overall waste, simply by taking advantage of recycling and composting programs already in place in Halifax.
To further reduce their carbon footprint, the conference used 100 per cent green energy for the first time ever. To make this possible, WTC Halifax as the venue, local hotels and CMA partnered to purchase green energy through Bullfrog Power.
WTC Halifax also coordinated a sustainable menu. By concentrating on local, organic, seasonal and fairly traded options, the conference was not only able to reduce their carbon footprint, but also supported Nova Scotia’s local economy. Excess food was saved and donated to a local foodbank.
