WHO - European Healthy Cities Network

Feb 17, 2015

BUCHAREST, ROMANIA - On February 16, 2015 World Trade Center Bucharest was the venue for an important intersectoral Working Group of the “World Health Organization - European Healthy Cities Network”.

Last year, on August 29, 2014, during an event organized at WTC Bucharest by Bucharest City Hall, the capital city of Romania joined the WHO European Healthy Cities Network. The mayor, Dr. Sorin Oprescu, expressed the local council’s commitment to placing health at the core of urban development.

3 main axes were defined for placing urban health in the context of the health system:

  • investing in educational infrastructure and expanding the health-promoting-schools approach : healthy life style-healthy City
  • preserving and increasing green spaces (green Bucharest);
  • encouraging physical activity by developing a network of bicycle lanes.

The topics of debate of the intersectoral Working Group held in the NY Auditorium –WTC Bucharest were meant to promote:

  • participatory governance for health
  • health and equity in all local policies
  • integrated planning for health

These are good grounds for cooperation with fellow WTCs having City Hall in their shareholding structures.
