Propane Facilities Positive Step Towards Diversity

Dec 05, 2016

EDMONTON, CANADA - The Edmonton Chamber of Commerce welcomes the provincial government’s efforts to help diversify and grow the economy with the approval of royalty credits for two new propane processing facilities as part of its Petrochemical Diversification Program.

The two facilities represent a total of $6 billion in capital investment, and will turn propane into propylene and polypropylene, the materials needed to manufacture higher value plastic products. They are the first of their kind in Canada and will take advantage of existing infrastructure, including access to rail, pipelines and roads, as well as a skilled, local workforce.

“These facilities will create thousands of local construction jobs, and close to 250 long-term positions once the plants are in operation,” said Janet Riopel, President & CEO of the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce. “This is exactly the kind of diversification Alberta needs. Instead of shipping propane out of Alberta, it will be processed right here.”

The Edmonton Chamber is a long-time advocate of economic diversification.

“We’re pleased to see the Province promoting and supporting value-added processing. Given the economic downturn, it’s more important than ever to focus on diversification within existing sectors,” said Riopel. “We look forward to additional announcements and support from the Province for these types of innovative projects that Alberta needs to build a strong, sustainable economic future.”
