From Fur Trade to World Trade

WINNIPEG, CANADA - Western Canada’s largest winter festival took place in Winnipeg, Manitoba this past February. What does this festival celebrate? Trade and culture!

Manitoba’s early French-Canadian pioneers better known as “Voyageurs” settled the region to engage in trade with the local Indigenous communities. Trading posts established throughout Western Canada were used to trade animal pelts for food and other provisions. Arriving from Eastern Canada to open new trade routes across North America and to Europe, the pioneers unknowingly created a new North American culture by learning from and living with the Indigenous communities.

“It’s really amazing to learn the history of trade and its development in our region. We were founded on the principle of international trade and today, where it all started, is an established World Trade Centre”, says Mariette Mulaire, President & CEO, WTC Winnipeg.
