ELON MUSK’S TUNNEL SYSTEM PROGRESSES IN LAS VEGAS

Mar 19, 2020

Construction efforts for Elon Musk’s underground transportation system beneath the Las Vegas Convention Center is progressing with excavation now underway on the second of two tunnels comprising the Convention Center Loop. This latest milestone comes shortly after the boring machine tunneled 4,486 feet to complete the first tunnel.

Since that breakthrough, construction crews have been disassembling the boring machine and transporting the pieces by truck back to the original launch shaft located near the convention center South Hall. The machine was then lowered piece by piece and tunneling is now underway 40 feet belowground as it follows a parallel path alongside the first tunnel.

The Convention Center Loop is the first commercial endeavor for Elon Musk’s tunnel boring company and is designed to transport up to 4,400 convention attendees per hour across the Las Vegas Convention Center’s 200-acre campus. The system will use Tesla vehicles to whisk convention attendees between the convention halls by taking advantage of three stations located by the South Hall, Central Hall, and new West Hall. The entire trip from one end of the loop to the other will take about one minute at no cost to convention attendees.

The $52.5 million underground transportation system is on track to be completed by the end of the year and is set to debut to the public, along with the new West Hall expansion, in January 2021.
