Chamber Applauds Federal Approval of Pipelines

Nov 30, 2016

EDMONTON, CANADA - The Edmonton Chamber of Commerce welcomes the federal government’s decision, announced yesterday, to approve two pipeline projects which will give Alberta access to new markets and help to alleviate Alberta’s reliance on a single customer for its crude oil products.

The Federal government approved Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain Expansion Project and Enbridge’s Line 3 Replacement Project. These approvals will improve our competitiveness and help diversify our energy markets, and are a welcome signal to investors that Canada is a serious international trading partner.

“Canada, Alberta, and Edmonton will benefit enormously from these pipeline approvals,” said Janet Riopel, President & CEO of the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce. “They will create much-needed jobs for Albertans, and allow oil and gas companies to access new markets safely and efficiently and to get the best prices possible for products that we know world markets want.”

The Edmonton Chamber has been a long-time advocate of the responsible development of major infrastructure projects to ensure Alberta’s people, products and services reach new markets.

“We need linkages to new markets by land, sea, and air,” said Riopel. “The Trans Mountain Expansion project facilitates one of the best and fastest routes to get Alberta’s oil to Asia.”

“Now that these announcements have been made, we hope to see the projects’ proponents work closely with all stakeholders to expedite the construction of these crucial and valuable links to new markets."
