A Cultural Launch into DC's Spring

Mar 20, 2015

WASHINGTON, DC, USA â€“– The World Trade Center Washington, DC kicked-off this Spring with two cultural celebrations of the outdoors that draw crowds annually to our nation’s capitol city. The initiatives brought together our city’s love for biking and our picturesque cherry blossom trees.

Each year, the National Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates spring in Washington, DC, the gift of the cherry blossom trees, and the enduring friendship between the people of the United States and Japan. The Festival produces and coordinates daily events featuring diverse and creative programming promoting traditional and contemporary arts and culture, natural beauty, and community spirit. The WTCDC acts as a main underwriter for the marquee event - and ushered the town into the season through the Pink Tie Party on Thursday evening, March 19 at 7:00pm. Proceeds from the event benefited the Festival’s year-round educational initiatives, tree-planting program and helps to ensure that the Cherry Blossoms remain free and open to the public for generations to come.

“One of the goals of our World Trade Center is to give back to the local community and develop deeper relationships in the city where we thrive,” said John P. Drew President and Chief Executive Officer of the WTCDC. “The National Cherry Blossom Festival is a signature event for D.C., which marks a turning point for the city as we welcome the warmer days of spring, as well as millions of visitors who want to be a part of the celebrations.”

In this vein, the WTCDC was similarly proud to support for a world class sculpture exhibit, “Las Bicicletas,” by Mexican artist Seńor Gilberto Aceves Navarro. Andrew Gelfuso, Vice President of the WTCDC, spoke at the opening reception. He emphasized that “the designs of Seńor Navarro's sculptures truly speak to colorful vibrant cross cultural diplomacy and advances cultural understanding through the visual arts with this dynamic artistic exchange.”

We encourage visitors to stop by the Woodrow Wilson Plaza to view the exhibit and participate in the National Cherry Blossom Festival activities.
