For the eleventh straight year, the Port of San Diego has received the prestigious National Procurement Institute’s (NPI) Achievement of Excellence (AEP) in Procurement Award.

The NPI’s AEP Awards started in 1995 as a program designed to recognize organizational excellence in public procurement. The AEP is earned by those organizations that demonstrate excellence by obtaining a high score based on standardized criteria designed to measure innovation, professionalism, productivity, e-procurement and leadership attributes of the procurement organization.

“The Port’s Procurement Department has demonstrated excellence year after year. It is truly a service-oriented department, handling public contracting, purchasing and much more,” said Garry Bonelli, Chairman of the Board of Port Commissioners. “I’m pleased that the team’s efforts have been recognized with the AEP award and proud of their commitment to good government practices.”

The award consists of 33 different criteria that required the Procurement Services Department to create narratives and surveys, gather data and provide up-to-date policies and procedures. The department worked in teams throughout the year to collect all the information and data necessary to meet and exceed the requirements. Teams were created based on varying procurement expertise and past experience.

The Port is one of 46 agencies in California and one of only 39 special districts in the United States and Canada to be recognized with the AEP award in 2019.

The Port’s Procurement Services Department is responsible for the administration and execution of public purchasing and contracting and the receipt, handling and disposition of public property. The award results assist the department with utilizing the information to improve both internal and external procedures and processes. Each year that the department applies for the award, they have a goal to improve the overall score.

NPI will be holding its annual conference in Las Vegas in October, where the Port’s Procurement Department will be officially recognized for receiving the award.
