Panama's new ICT strategy

Dec 05, 2016

By investing in new ICT programmes and infrastructure, Panama is looking to improve the efficiency of public services, drive economic competitiveness and promote social inclusion.

In late September the National Authority for Government Innovation (Autoridad Nacional para la Innovación Gubernamental, AIG) announced the launch of Panama Online (Panamá en Línea), a flagship e-government initiative.

The goals of the five-year Panama Online project include: improving the efficiency of public services and simplifying government procedures; increasing access for socially-disadvantaged citizens; strengthening the AIG and other government institutions via online services; and developing online capacity at the Ministry of Education.

At a total cost of $30m, $22m of the project will be financed by an Inter-American Development Bank loan and the remaining $8m by the government.

The implementation of Panama Online is expected to help contribute to Panama’s economic competitiveness and improve the country’s standings in e-government rankings.
