India & Vietnam dialog: Supply Chain Management

After nearly three decades of impressive growth, China’s manufacturing sector is showing signs of stagnation. There are many reasons to it. From rising salaries, labour turbulence, environmental devastation and business issues to trade war with the US. Today, China is no longer an attractive place for US and European companies to depend on their manufacturing requirement. This together with the COVID-19 pandemic and a negative global outlook towards China have simultaneously opened up larger-horizon prospects for developing nations that now have a second chance, having missed the bus on manufacturing and export-led growth earlier.
A study by Japanese financial group Nomura found that between April 2018 and August 2019, 56 companies relocated supply chain and manufacturing out of China. Of these, 26 went to Vietnam, 11 chose Taiwan, eight settled in Thailand and three came to India.
SMEs are the driving force of Chinese economy. Currently, SMEs represent more than 90 percent of the enterprises in China and contribute over 60 percent of its GDP, over 70 percent to patents, and account for 80 percent of nationwide jobs. The deep penetration of SMEs, together with growth in digital connectivity, infrastructure development coupled with rising household income will help the developing countries an opportunity to seize larger share in realignment of global supply chains. This would help to alleviate the unemployment situation and move much of the population away from agriculture.
In the first session of the international webinar series, experts from Vietnam and India will share thoughts about the lessons and plans of both countries in becoming the next manufacturing hub, via supporting local SMEs and the supply chain management.
