MDP on Cyber Security & Data Protection

A one day Management Development Program on Cyber Security and Data Protection was organized by World Trade Centre Bhubaneswar in association with Collage of IT & Management Education (A Constituent College of Biju Patnaik University of Technology, Odisha). Accredited organizations namely the Police Commissionerate-Bhubaneswar-Cuttack, National Law University Odisha (NLUO) and International Institute of Information Technology, Bhubaneswar (IIITB) joined the MDP as knowledge partners while Kalinga Kusum Foundation stood as the outreach partner for the program.

Police Commissioner Mr. YB Khurania, IPS graced the inaugural session of the program as Chief Guest. Mr. Khurania in his key note address stressed on creating a youth movement in training all internet users on the issues of cyber security and data protection. Noting the requirement of general public awareness, he shared several examples of how his department is fighting cyber crime despite the existing resource constraints. He further highlighted the hard-work put in by the police officers for cracking challenging cyber crime cases and thereby creating best practices in policing cyber crime. “Smart city is all about smart technology. Cyber security is the need of the time. Our citizens, police officers and especially the youth must be well trained to handle the security issues” he added.

Prof (Dr.) Gopal Krishna Nayak, Director, International Institute of Information Technology, Bhubaneswar spoke about the increasing usage of technology which in turn is influencing the entire life style of the citizens. “With increasing use of the internet, we are exposing ourselves to greater vulnerability as comfort brings risk” he said. He further deliberated on the need for creating customized awareness programs for the internet users based on their requirement. “Information about the safety parameters should be open and readily made available to the end users each and every time they perform any vital tasks using the cyber space” he added.

Prof R.N. Sahu, Faculty, CIME spoke about CIME’s focus on training students in cyber security. “Education and awareness is the only solution to the fight against the negative aspects of the digitalized mechanisms” he said.

Earlier Ms. Nimeshika Natarajan, Assistant Director, World Trade Centre Bhubaneswar, welcomed the dignitaries and shared the objective of the program with all the delegates. “The MDP aims to address the awareness issues and brief the participants on how to ensure the safety and security of cyberspace. The objective is thus to create a basic awareness about the social, technical and legal aspects of Cyber Security” she said. 

Subsequently in the technical session Ms. Anila Anand, Inspector, Crime Branch- cyber cell shared her experience of fighting cybercrime and on how best the citizens can stay aware and alert. Prof (Dr.) Abhik Majumdar, Assistant Professor Law, National Law University Odisha spoke about the legal and regulatory issues related to identity theft and explained how best one could interpret the IT Act of 2000 and amendment of 2008. Prof (Dr.) Debasish Jena, Associate Professor, IIITB and his team demonstrated the process of ethical hacking by getting access to participants’ Gmail, Facebook, and other social media accounts thereby showcasing the vulnerability of the common internet users.

A lively open house discussion on various ways to deal with cyber security and cyber-crime issues further added immense value to the program.
